Stop Sucking and Start Something

Accel Lifestyle’s mission is to build a more sustainable and ethical community. We would love for you to think about how much plastic you consume on a daily basis.
Plastic Free July is a movement focusing on eliminating single use plastic items during the month of July. This movement began in Australia in 2011 and has since spread around the globe to more than 150 countries.
Let's start with a few statistics...every year more than 8 million tons of garbage are dumped in our ocean. Think about that for a minute, that is equal to 26,143 Boeing 747 airplanes! The beautiful ocean is slowly being killed by our constant use of plastic products. Beautiful sea life creatures mistake plastic bags for food.  Once the plastic is eaten, sea life cannot digest it, so it remains in their stomach which ultimately kills them. Other plastic items can get stuck around the necks or limbs of sea turtles and other animals causing infection or loss of limbs. We challenge you to be mindful of how much plastic you use on a daily basis and commit to use substantially less.
Now what can we do to participate in a plastic free lifestyle? We are here to tell you it is actually quite easy:
1. Use glassware instead of plastic plates and silverware.
For days when you need disposable plates, find recyclable or biodegradable plates (here is one of our favorites).
2. Use reusable coffee cups and water bottles.
Instead of using a plastic or styrofoam coffee cups, there are great options that double as a water bottle and thermos like this or this.
3. Use reusable bags while shopping.
Many grocery stores sell reusable bags very inexpensively so you can reuse them every visit skipping the plastic bags.
4. When buying produce, skip the plastic bag.
Put the produce into one of your handy reusable bags and rinse them when you get home instead of using a plastic bag to hold them.
Major companies are also joining the movement toward making our world a plastic free zone. Let's check out the awesome work some of our favorite companies are doing!
Most of us love some Starbucks to start off our mornings or as an afternoon pick-me-up. This massive coffee franchise recently joined the movement to reduce the plastic that is killing our environment. In the past, Starbucks has focused on recycling by including recycling bins in all their stores and promoting reusable cups. To continue Starbucks' commitment to the earth, they have announced the campaign to eliminate plastic straws by 2020. Eliminating straws from this one franchise will reduce approximately a billion straws a year...yes, 1 BILLION! In order to accommodate those wanting straws, a paper alternative will be provided, which is a more environmentally friendly option.
Evian, a well-known water bottle company, has made a similar pledge to reduce the waste their plastic water bottles leave in the environment. By 2025, their goal is to have Evian water bottles made out of 100% recycled materials. While they are working toward this goal, Evian is working with other companies to recycle the current water bottles to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.
There are many other simple ways to reduce the plastic waste in our daily lives. Help our environment by choosing reusable goods every single day instead of getting plastic that only ends up in our beautiful oceans!
